Dili, 11 March 2026 –
The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs (MCAE), through the Interim General Coordinator Alves Gomes Martins, received a courtesy visit from the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) delegation at the Government Palace in Dili. The meeting discussed opportunities for cooperation in digital economy transformation and financial technology (finch) to support Timor-Leste’s economic development.
According to Alves Gomes Martins, Timor-Leste does not only seek to acquire technology but also aims to become part of the global digital economy. Both sides agreed to further explore cooperation through knowledge exchange and possible study visits for Timorese officials to Hong Kong to learn about digital infrastructure, including block chain technology, digital payment systems, and cybersecurity.
During the meeting, HKETO Director-General Libera Cheng presented the “Single Window” digital system, which allows traders to submit documents through a single online platform, reducing bureaucracy and operational costs. She also highlighted that Hong Kong could help Timor-Leste access financing in multiple currencies—RMB, HKD, and USD—to diversify financial options and support the country’s economic modernization and future integration into ASEAN.
